This research was conducted by examining the geological conditions of the region, including formations, the aquifer, rivers, springs, as well as the status of faults, by integrating 1:100,000-scale maps of the Karaj, Hashtgerd, Tehran, Marzanabad, and Shekran areas, and preparing new maps, tables, and necessary diagrams. The investigations were carried out on 140 springs located in the highlands, the main faults of the region, the emergence of springs in geological formations, and the flow direction in the southern parts of the study area. The activity of faults at the location of some springs has caused fracturing of layers and fragmentation of rocks, increased drainage, and elevated spring discharge in that area. In some parts, the activity of faults and tectonic processes has caused the displacement of layers, and the presence of shale layers in the lithological composition of formations has led to a decrease in spring yield and discharge. Given the elevation difference of approximately 300 meters between the Hashtgerd heights and the plain in the southern part of the region, the examination of flow lines and flow direction in that area indicates that the aquifer thickness as well as the elevation difference at the boundary between the mountain and the plain has increased the flow gradient. The results of this research are highly effective in determining the water balance conditions of the Hashtgerd aquifer, and given the water transfer project from Taleghan to Karaj and the location of this project within the fault zone, the importance of understanding the relationship between faults and groundwater in this area increases.
