The rock-hewn village of Kandovan is one of the most prominent examples of human-nature coexistence, whose physical fabric has been shaped under the direct influence of geological processes. The aim of this research is to investigate the reciprocal relationship between the structural geomorphological characteristics of the substrate and the hand-carved architectural patterns, with the goal of formulating strategies for sustainable geotourism development. This research was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and a qualitative approach. Data were collected through library studies, analysis of geological maps, field surveys, and examination of the joint system and lithological characteristics of the ignimbrite, and were then matched with the architectural patterns of the rock cones. Geometric analyses were also employed to explain the relationship between the thickness of geological layers and the physical dimensions of the cones. The results indicate that the architecture of Kandovan is a tangible example of geophilic architecture. The conjugate joint system resulting from the weight pressure of overlying layers and the cooling of Sahand's pyroclastic rocks has determined the orientation of entrances and the ease of excavation, while the conical form resulting from differential erosion has determined the functional hierarchy of spaces from the livestock section to the residential area. Furthermore, the physical properties of the ignimbrite, such as porosity and thermal inertia, have led to the creation of passive climatic comfort with a significant difference compared to the external environment and the realization of a zero-carbon architectural model. Unlike many similar global examples, the vitality of Kandovan's ecosystem has elevated its geotourism value from a physical heritage to a geo-cultural heritage. The sustainability of this region depends on geotechnical management to control erosion and simultaneously protect geological processes and vernacular architectural patterns as a unified cultural landscape.
